It’s Labor Day…

Don’t Forget About Child Labor

On this Labor Day, Monday September 4, 2023 please to take a moment to acknowledge that, despite all the social and economic achievements of the American worker, we still have far to go.

While our labor movement has fought tirelessly to improve the wages, benefits, and working conditions for workers, child labor violations have been on the rise in recent years. After the pandemic, the United States saw child labor increase as employers looked to child workers as a cheap way to make up for the labor shortages after the pandemic.

The United State’s Dept. of Labor has seen a 69% increase in child labor since 2018, with more than 3,800 children impacted in 2022. We agree with Justice At Last former Board Member Ruth Silver-Taube, that “…we must provide resources to labor agencies to enforce existing child labor laws and not weaken laws that protect children from exploitation.”

Justice At Last is honored to be partnering with Dr. Suamhirs Piraino-Guzman and hosting a FREE virtual training tailored for providers serving Transitionally Aged Youth (TAY), focusing on understanding, recognizing, and addressing the risk factors associated with suicide within this age group as this transitional phase from adolescence to adulthood is often filled with challenges. This event is sponsored in-part by the San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services.
