San Jose Open House

On July 16, 2025 we hosted our second summer outreach event at our San Jose office. Our staff, Board and Volunteers talked about our work and impact within Santa Clara County and throughout the Bay Area. It was an evening of connection, reflection and celebration. And, we announced the winner of the two free Lady Gaga concert tickets. Congratulations again to Jessica Wahl of the San Jose IRC, we hope your family enjoyed the show!

23 guests toured our space, and we were honored to host representatives from Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren’s Office, the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco, Home First of Santa Clara County, Caminar, El Concilio of San Mateo County, Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Center, and Lincoln Law School, as well as supporters & longtime contributors of Justice At Last.

Film Screening and Panel Discussion

On July 30, 2025, in observance of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we hosted a hybrid screening and panel discussion of the documentary film, “This Adventure Called California.”

We were honored to partner with Tree Climber Media and award-winning Producer and Director Jennifer Huang to screen this documentary for free! This film addresses the vulnerabilities of being trafficked and re-exploited, as well as the determination and incredible resilience of the protagonist, Arnoldo Lopez Contreras, to move forward and overcome constant obstacles.

We were grateful to have a panel of recognized experts in the anti-trafficking movement to help the audience understand today’s challenges for survivors of trafficking. Discussion focused on the current legal obstacles, including prosecuting traffickers and why survivors might not come forward and report their trafficking, out of fear of deportation and or criminalization.

Now more than ever, we need your support. We have seen an uptick in the demand for our legal and supportive services. For instance, phone calls from survivors who are worried about their rights as immigrants are at an all-time high. Regardless of whether a caller recently became a U.S. citizen, has legal temporary status, or recently submitted a T-Visa application, immigrant survivors are worried about what might happen if they report their victimhood:

• “Will law enforcement believe me?”

• “Will I get arrested, detained, and placed in expedited deportation proceedings?”

• “What will happen to my 3-year-old daughter who is a U.S. citizen if I get deported?”

• “Are there any benefits I can access to help me get out of this situation and become less vulnerable to further exploitation?”

Our direct service staff are busy answering these types of questions with empathy, understanding, and compassion, while at the same time being transparent about the eroding rights of foreign nationals as well as U.S. citizens.

We are continuing to show up and advocate in court for the rights of all trafficking survivors. Additionally, we are engaging in our communities’ coalition, collaborative, and task force meetings, ensuring that allies understand that labor trafficking exists in addition to sex trafficking, and about the intersections of trafficking and forced criminality. We are also helping inform stakeholders and the community at large that trafficking is happening in our backyards, and that traffickers are living a dream right now because of all the fear and the erasure of rights.
