The Fight for Workers’ Rights

As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we reflect on a truth we witness every day: progress is built on courage.

We see it in the survivors of trafficking we represent and support; individuals who have endured exploitation, physical and sexual abuse, and unimaginable harm, yet still find the strength to come forward. To speak about the truth. To share their testimonies. To seek justice. Their voices are powerful, and they change systems that once silenced them.

We are reminded, too, of Dolores Huerta and her extraordinary sacrifice. After experiencing violence, she continued to put the farmworkers’ movement ahead of her own victimization. She did this at a time when speaking out carried immense risk. Her resilience helped shape a movement. But her testimony is also not unique, as many survivors remain silent for multiple reasons. Dolores Huerta’s story also underscores why survivors deserve support, not silence, when they come forward.

On Farmworkers’ Day, we honor those whose labor sustains us and those who have been exploited in the shadows. Many of the clients we represent come from these very fields and workplaces. Their courage to speak is not just personal—it is transformative.

At Justice At Last, we stand beside survivors of trafficking every step of the way, ensuring that when a trafficked person chooses to raise their voice, they are heard, supported, their rights are enforced and advocated for, and they are never alone.

Because courage like this should not be met with barriers. It should be met with justice.

What Advocacy Looks Like Today

The movement Dolores Huerta dedicated her life to is not a relic of the past.

Today, an estimated 2.9 million agricultural workers labor in the United States, and many still face unsafe conditions, wage theft, housing insecurity, and lack of access to healthcare. In many states, farmworkers remain excluded from basic labor protections guaranteed to other workers.

Women in agriculture face a double burden — both the hardships of fieldwork and disproportionate rates of sexual harassment, assault, and exploitation. Dolores Huerta has spoken about this directly, linking her labor activism to the broader feminist movement: you cannot separate economic justice from bodily autonomy.

Dolores Huerta is now in her 90s and still organizing! For instance, the Dolores Huerta Foundation continues to train community leaders across California's Central Valley and beyond, focusing especially on developing Latina women into civic advocates. Her model is local, persistent, and personal: show up, listen, build trust, and never stop.

For the rest of us, advocacy can take many forms.

• It might mean consciously choosing to buy from farms with fairtrade and labor certifications.

• It might mean contacting your representatives about agricultural labor reform.

• It might mean supporting organizations like the Dolores Huerta Foundation or the UFW Foundation directly.

• Or it might simply start with learning — go to your local farmers’ markets to understand whose hands brought the food to your table, and what their lives look like.

As Dolores Huerta has often said, the work is not glamorous. It is persistent. It is local. It is relational. And it is necessary.

Justice At Last is hosting our next “Volunteer Orientation and Introduction to Human Trafficking” training on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM Pacific Time.

The training is a prerequisite for all volunteers, including our Board members, and will provide you with an introduction to what human trafficking is and the work we do throughout the Greater Bay Area. We will also address the different volunteer opportunities that help support our work on behalf of trafficked persons. If you are currently volunteering for us but have not yet attended this introduction training, we ask that you plan to attend for the first 60 minutes of the event.
