We Can’t Believe It Is Already May!

We have been busy out and about within the community, in courts throughout the Bay Area, and advocating on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., and we wanted to share some updates.

This year, we have already trained over 700 attorneys, service providers, law enforcement personnel and survivors about the rights of trafficked persons.

In April, we opened our first office in Santa Clara County to better serve our clients in the South Bay community and we will be hosting an Open House on May 24th, please join us!

In the Community:

For Human Trafficking Awareness Month in January, we conducted two in-person trainings on the intersections of human trafficking and LGBTQIA2+ and migrant communities in San Francisco and San Carlos. Justice At Last Advisors Nat Paul, Julissa Ponce and Rafael Bautista facilitated both trainings.

In February, we completed our first 40 Hour Certified Training on the Human Trafficking Case Worker Privilege. This important privilege is designed to protect communications when supporting survivors of human trafficking. Participants were from partnering organizations, including Motivating, Inspiring, Supporting & Serving Sexually Exploited Youth (MISSSEY), Valley Crisis Center of Merced Alliance and the San Francisco Bay Area Human Trafficking Hotline.

In March, we were again in the community holding specialized trainings for the staff of the Family Law Facilitator and Self Help Center of the Superior Court of California of Lake County and the San Mateo County Private Defender Panel.

Advocacy in Washington D.C.

In April, we presented at Freedom Network USA annual conference with our Justice At Last Advisors about centering trafficking survivors within service providers’ day to day practice. Justice At Last’s Rose Mukhar, José Heredia-Rodriguez and Kendall Anderson also participated in the Freedom Network USA Lobby Day on Capitol Hill creating awareness about Federal legislation that impacts the legal forms of relief for trafficked persons.

In the Courts:

We continued to represent multiple survivors in a substantial criminal case against their exploiters in San Mateo Superior Court. Our legal team successfully helped vacate arrests and convictions in several counties throughout the Bay Area and we secured meaningful restitution in excess of $1.6 Million for 15 clients from their traffickers.

New San Jose Office!

While we have shared office space and partnered with many service providers for the past 8 years in Santa Clara County, we are thrilled to announce that we opened our first office in the County in April! Located off The Alameda in San Jose, this new space will allow us to better serve our clients in the South Bay community.

Volunteer Spotlight: Mikayla Zi Rui Pang!

We had the pleasure of working with Mikayla Zi Rui Pang over the summer of 2022. Mikayla is a senior at Yale-NUS College in Singapore. She is a philosophy major, currently working on her final year thesis focusing on the field of feminist philosophy. Through her internship with Justice At Last, she learned about the complexities of human trafficking, the demographics of trafficked survivors, and the ways in which traffickers keep trafficked individuals compliant. She also had a unique opportunity to observe the final stages and verdicts in a major human trafficking trial involving over 40 victims that Justice At Last is representing.

Mikayla recently organized a bake sale with the Yale-NUS Baker’s Organization to support Justice At Last by donating 100% of the sale proceeds.
