Summer Updates

Dear Justice At Last Supporters,

We’ve been busy this summer; in addition to representing clients like Rachel; advocating for survivors in immigration and other civil courts; and securing over $100,000 in lost wages for 6 survivors of trafficking through California Victim Compensation Board; we have been strengthening partnership, raising awareness, and taking action in communities across the region! For instance, we have been:

Engaging with neighbors at local farmers’ markets;
Partnering with Bay Area service providers like Narika to provide specialized trainings on the
- Intersections between domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking;
Presenting at the National Crime Victims’ Law Conference, on how Justice At Last and the Lotus Legal Clinic are working hard at
- Protecting Immigrant Survivors: Responding to the Erosion of Victim-Centered Protections under the Trafficking Victims’ Protection Act (TVPA); and,
Creating awareness at local Rotary Clubs like the Clayton Valley/Concord Sunrise Rotary Club about how
- Human trafficking affects our Bay Area communities and what we all can do to help support survivors and prevent trafficking.

We are honored to have your support and partnership to help make this summer a success enforcing our clients rights as well as helping build awareness and create meaningful change throughout our community.

Community Outreach

In June, our Board, Staff and Volunteers participated in the 108th Annual Livermore Rodeo Parade to let folks know about our impact throughout the Bay Area and to help promote the important work of the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance.

Presentations & Discussions

In May, our staff including CEO Rose Mukhar, Client Advocate Cate Rudy and Staff Attorney Hannah Garcia attended the National Crime Victim Law Institute’s (NCVLI) Annual Crime Victim Law Conference at the Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon.

Additionally, Rose and Erika Petty, Executive Director and Lead Attorney of the Lotus Legal Clinic presented at the Conference and addressed the purpose of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) focusing on the specific rights afforded immigrant survivors who seek safety, protection, and repair. They highlighted the current erosion of these protections as the definition of “victim” is being reshaped and vastly limited to exclude victims with imperfect histories.

At the Powerful Women International Connections roundtable discussion in San Francisco, Rose joined other panelists including Dr. Veronica Hunnicutt, Founder & Executive Director of the Hunnicutt Foundation, and Yuliya Raquel CEO & Founder of PatternFast Sustainable Fashion to talk about “Building a Resilient, Productive Community Together!”

Farmers’ Market Outreach

This summer, we have centered our outreach at farmers’ markets to create awareness that trafficking happens in our communities and to let folks know we have been supporting & representing survivors of trafficking over the last 11 years throughout the Bay Area.

We are proud that the farmers’ markets we partner with, including those facilitated by the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association and the Ecology Center also serve & support vulnerable communities by facilitating food assistance programs that increase fruit and vegetable consumption, including CalFresh (EBT), WIC, EatSF, and VeggieRX in partnership with Fresh Approach.

Our Social Justice Volunteer Ambassadors have been tabling at the markets informing community attendees about our work. It’s been a great opportunity for our volunteers to get involved in the anti-trafficking movement, build trust with community members, and help enhance an understanding that trafficking is happening here in the Bay Area.
